Attach a guitar strap to an acoustic guitar

There is so many people wondering how to attach a guitar strap with two button holes, to acoustic guitar with usually have one strap button on bottom or no strap button at all.

Basically, if your strap comes with a shoelace, you can tie the shoelace on your guitar headstock, under the string. If not, you can buy the shoelace first, and tie it. This is a good video example on how to tie it:

This is the cheapest and simplest way to get your acoustic guitar strapped. But definitely not the best way, because the shoelace may causing some trace on your guitar headstock, if you use it in a long period of time.

Another way, you can add a button on the neck of your acoustic guitar. Here’s the quick video tutorial:

But to do that, you have to be really careful, because that might be broke your acoustic guitar. Or you can bring your guitar to luthier, and tell them where you want your button installed. Here is example on where the best place on your acoustic guitar to be installed with button.

Remember not to use screw longer than 1″ and never use a power screw driver. You may also want to tell the luthier to lubricate the screw with wax before inserting it, because it will prevent cracking or splitting the wood.

Acoustic guitar strap is a must if you want to play acoustic guitar while standing. Not only for standing position, straps are also helpful to maintain proper guitar position while sitting. But unfortunately, not every acoustic guitar is equipped to be attached to a strap.

Here are some points to consider when you want to attach a strap to your acoustic guitar:

How many guitar strap button does your guitar has? Unlike electric guitars, which mostly have two strap buttons, acoustic guitars can have one or no strap button at all. You want to search for the most suitable acoustic guitar strap to adjust to your guitar strap button(s).
The materials used to make your strap. It may be leather or nylon, but some straps also contains steel on it, that may scratch your guitar. So be careful when choosing.
Width of the strap. It may be different to each guitar player, but usually acoustic guitar strap is about 2.5″ to 4″ wide.
Length of the strap. Again, this may vary based on the guitar player’s height and the comfort of the player. Usually strap length is between 37″ and 57″
Guitar strap button hole size. The standard is 1/4″, which fit most guitar and strap locks. Another is 3/8″, which is required for some straps lock, but I believe this is rare to meet.
